New data on COVID shots are in: vaccination rates have been abysmal

It has been almost a month since federal officials recommended new versions of the COVID-19 vaccine, and a national survey shows that only 7% of U.S. adults and 2% of children have gotten a shot.

While cases remain low compared with the pandemic’s earlier months, over 18,000 hospitalizations and 1,200 deaths continue to be reported weekly.

In response, government health officials have made the nation’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign more like the annual flu campaign by approving updated shots for Covid-variant XBB 1.5.

Dr. Camille Kotton of Harvard Medical School called the study’s numbers abysmal and said part of the problem may be patient confusion. Therefore, public education efforts should be a top priority.
