Climate change has been one of the biggest stories of the 21st century. Over the past half decade, the record for the global average daily sea surface temperature(SST) was broken twice, according to Copernicus climate modelling services. This happened once in 2016, with the SST reaching a record of 20.95C and again just this past week with a new SST record high of 20.96C.
Dr Samantha Burgess, researcher from Copernicus, highlights: “The facet that we’ve seen the record now makes me nervous about how much warmer the ocean may get between now and next March.”
Burning fossil fuels creates excess heat and the weather patterns have only been exacerbated by the atmosphere and climate breakdown, not to mention El Niño.
